In early August, I was fortunate to participate in an International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) workshop focused on early career researchers held in College Station, Texas. It was a whirlwind 3 days, but the connections I made will last forever!
The workshop focused on empowering us ECRs to access resources provided by IODP such as cores from past cruises, data from cores, and funding opportunities. With the decommissioning of the drillship JOIDES Resolution coming next year, it was insightful to see what else IODP has to offer.
We got a wonderful tour of the Gulf Coast Core Repository and I got to see some awesome cores, such as reef cores from Tahiti which are similar to those I will work on from Hawaii early next year.
Talking with fellow participants spurred intriguing ideas for future grants. I enjoyed brainstorming ways I can help with future projects, such as developing community college lab activities using core data.
